SMART CITIES ON THE RISE.

If you haven't heard about the smart city phenomenon yet, you will soon, if IHS Technology's report  about potential smart city growth proves accurate. The smart city trend is evolving quickly from one off-projects impacting single-function applications, such as street lighting or traffic flow, to large-scale, municipal capital investments integrating multiple city services and departments. IHS expect the number of  smart cities worldwide to quadruple within a 12-year period spanning from 2013 to 2025.Under IHS' definition, there will be at least 88 smart cities globally by 2025, up from 21 in 2013.Annual investment on smart city projects, which reached slightly more than one billion Dollar in 2013, is predicted to surpass twelve billion Dollar in 2025. Smart city definition vary, but IHS thinks of smart cities as those that have deployed-or are piloting-the integration of information, communications and technology (ICT) solutions across three or more different funct...

THE IMPACT OF AUTOMATION AND AI ON JOBS.

As computers began to appear in offices and robots on factory floors,President Jhon F. Kennedy declared that the major domestic challenge of the 1960s was to ''maintain full employment at a time when automation...is re placing men.'' In a column in the Guardian, stephen Hawking wrote ''that the automation of factories has already decimated jobs in traditional manufacturing, and the rise of artificial intelligence is likely to extend this job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative or supervisory roles remaining''. He adds his voice to a growing chorus of experts concerned about the effects that technology will have on workforce in the coming years an decades. The fear is that while artificial intelligence will bring radical increases in efficiency in industry, for ordinary people this will translate into unemployment and uncertainty, as their human jobs are replaced by machines. A report put out in February...

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE.

Temperature rise due to climate change may radically damage the global economy and slow growth in the coming decades if nothing is done to slow the pace of warming, according to new research. The researchers behind the study, published in the journal Nature, found that temperature change due to unmitigated global warming will leave global GDP per capita 23% lower in 2100 than it would be without any warming. '' We are basically throwing away money by not addressing the issue,'' said Marshall Burke, an assistant professor at Stanford University. '' We see our study as providing an estimate of the benefits of reducing emissions.'' Their conclusions delivers two blockbusters.First, in contrast to past studies, they argue that 21st century warming could lead to huge global-scale macroeconomic impacts. The best estimate from Burke and colleagues is that business as usual emission throughout the 21st century will decrease GDP per capita by 23% below w...

AFRICA IS IT THE NEW FRONTIER FOR THE LUXURY INDUSTRY?

Asked whether Africa is the new frontier for the luxury industry, we would be tempted to say yes. Growth rates have continued to considerable flew Saharan Africa oscillating between 5% and 7% for a little over a decade. These sustained growth rate, combined with favorable economic policies boosted consumption and given birth to an African middle class. The latter is defined as the share of the population earning between $ 2 and $ 20 per day.The number of individuals related to the African middle class will increase from 355 million people (34% of the population) to 1.1 billion (42% of the population) by 2060. Nevertheless, 60% of individuals of the middle class in Africa (around 180 million people) are not far from the poverty line: they form "the floating class" composed of individuals earning between $ 2 and $ 4 per day.The latter are in a vulnerable position and may at any time of falling back into poverty if an unexpected shock occurs: in case of loss of income sou...

BARRIERS TO BANKING IN AFRICA.

The lack of political will Policy makers across the continent, few seem ready to facilitate the installation and accessibility of banks through legislation and appropriate devices. The tradition The weight of tradition is such that public confidence in the banking system is close to zero. The habit of the famous "tontine" these kinds of ancestors of microcredit continue to be, an essential part of informal savings systems. Everything is based on trust based on friendship, brotherhood or clan. What is it about? Some people create a commo...

THE REAL ESTATE BOOM IN AFRICA.

Africa's population will more than triple over the next 40 years, is the UN-HABITAT observation in its 2010 report on the State of African Cities: Governance, Inequality and land markets.Several studies and statistics on the issue, the African continent will experience indeed a very strong settlement process in the coming decades.A population growth which will inevitably be accompanied by strong urbanization of the cities has already begun elsewhere. Thus, according to the report, 400 million Africans currently live in urban areas, 40% of the population, against 3% it there's 50 and 1.2 billion in 2050, representing 60% of the population. Africa is so far the continent where urban growth is strongest. The number of city dwellers is increasing (in the order of 5% to 7% per year, a rate twice as fast as its total population). Thus, Cairo (Egypt), with 11 million inhabitants, remains the largest agglomeration. But it will be overtaken by Lagos, Nigeria's capital (12.4 million)...

THE FINANCIAL CRISIS OF 2008 OR THE DOPING OF THE US ECONOMY.

How has it started? The crisis of 2008 began with the difficulties faced by US households on low incomes, to repay the loans that had been granted to them for the purchase of their homes. These funds were intended for borrowers who did not have sufficient guarantees to benefit from preferential interest rates ( "prime rate"), but only to less preferential rates ("subprime"). The indebtedness of US households could rely on the extremely low interest rates practiced for years by the Central Bank of the United States (FED) in 2001 after the stock market crisis of values "internet".In addition, loans were rechargeable, which means that regularly, we took into account the increase in value of the property, and the borrower is allowed to réendetter the amount of the increase in the value of its assets. This has boosted the growth of the United States. Credits "subprime" were backed by a mortgage on the purchased housing, t...
